Receiving a suspicious call, text, or email claiming to be from the CRA can be stressful. But instead of panicking, empower yourself with the right steps to take!
Your Action Plan:
Don't Engage: Do NOT reply to suspicious texts or emails. If it's a call, hang up immediately. Do not provide any personal information.
Verify, Verify, Verify: If you're unsure whether a contact is legitimate, don't use the contact info provided by the caller/sender. Instead, go to the official CRA website (canada.ca/cra) or call their general inquiries line directly (e.g., 1-800-959-8281 for individuals) to check if there's a real issue with your account.
Report It! Even if you didn't fall for the scam, reporting it is crucial. Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC). This helps law enforcement track down scammers and protect others. You can report online or by phone.
Stay Informed: Keep an eye on the "Current scams alerts - CRA" section on the CRA's official website to stay updated on the latest scam tactics.
Being prepared is your best defense against tax scams.
