We've all heard stories about phone scams, and unfortunately, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is a common target for impersonation. But how can you tell if that call, text, or email is genuinely from the CRA or a sneaky scammer? It's easier than you think to spot the red flags!
Watch Out for These Clues:
Demands for Immediate Payment: Scammers often try to pressure you into paying right away, perhaps for a "tax debt."
Threatening Language: They might use scary words like "arrest warrant" or "legal action" to frighten you.
Suspicious Links: If an email or text asks you to click a strange link to "verify your account," be very careful!
Requests for Odd Payment Methods: The CRA will never ask you to pay with gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers.
Asking for Too Much Personal Info: Be wary if they ask for sensitive details over the phone or email that the CRA would already have.
If something feels off, trust your gut. It’s always okay to take a moment and question why they're reaching out.
