To be eligible for the DTC, a medical practitioner must certify that you have a severe and prolonged impairment that has lasted, or is expected to last, for at least 12 months. The impairment must result in a "marked restriction" in one or more of the "basic activities of daily living" all or almost all of the time (generally interpreted as 90% or more). These activities include walking, dressing, feeding, eliminating, hearing, speaking, vision, or mental functions necessary for everyday life. You may also be eligible if you require life-sustaining therapy that takes an average of at least 14 hours per week.
